About San Miguel de Allende
Friar Juan de San Miguel founded a small settlement called Itzcuinapan, in the area nowadays known as “El Chorro” in 1592. Later renamed San Miguel el Grande during the time of the silver route from Guanajuato to Mexico City. It was re-baptized San Miguel de Allende in 1826 to honor Ignacio Allende, its native son and hero of our Mexican independence. Today, most of the city center architecture is a wonderful mix of 18th and 17th century buildings.
San Miguel was rediscovered as an art center by foreign visitors after the arrival of American-born artist Stirling Dickinson in the 1930’s. Later it attracted many WWII veterans who came to study art abroad under the GI bill; in fact, the original Bellas Artes and Instituto Allende art schools continue to thrive and attract students from around the globe. The city´s popularity continued to grow throughout the 20th century. Today, it is a diverse cosmopolitan city renowned for its cultural richness and depth, yet it has managed to conserve an easy-going small town feel.
Famous for its accessibility and temperate climate, San Miguel de Allende is an endless source of wonder for residents and visitors alike. And, if you would rather ride than walk, public transportation and taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. There is always something new to discover and enjoy; an amalgam of architecture, art, local crafts and authentic local festivities which have been preserved over centuries. San Miguel is home to Mexican and International cuisine, organic farming, vineyards, world-class concerts and so much more. Its colonial atmosphere takes you back to a romantic era in Mexico.
